What is a Hot Roof and Why Should I Have One?

The most effective way to insulate your home, achieve greater comfort in your living spaces and reduce your energy consumption and costs is to install a Hot Roof, which is the insulation of all the walls and the roof of your attic.

A Hot Roof will optimally retain the heat or air conditioning in your home, helping you save an average of 50% or more on your energy bills year round.

Installing a Hot Roof: What it entails

One of the first things we do as we’re prepping a home for a Hot Roof installation is conduct a Blower Door Test to determine the amount of air leakage in the home before the insulation is installed.

The Hot Roof will seal the lid of the home, improving the home’s airtightness and stopping the “stack effect,” which is when warm air rises to the top of the home, creating uneven temperatures around the living spaces.

We also remove any old insulation, as it can contain mold, rodent feces, and insects, creating a toxic unhealthy stew that diminishes your home’s air quality. We want you to start fresh with new, clean insulation!

The Hot Roof process starts with installing the Intello membrane, which holds the densely-packed cellulose insulation in place and serves as a barrier to moisture to keep the insulation dry and mold-free. We then blow the environmentally-safe and non-combustible cellulose behind the Intello, making sure to pack it near the eaves of the attic to prevent the future formation of ice dams.

As soon as the attic becomes a finished Hot Roof, it is keeping the home’s inhabitants warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer while cutting their energy bills in half.

Benefits of a Hot Roof Installation:

  • Prevents Ice dams
  • Seals the lid, cuts drafts
  • Cuts energy costs
  • Makes living spaces more uniformly comfortable – no 10 degree differences
  • Helps create more livable space – can convert attic and/or basement
  • Helps AC run more efficiently
  • Prolongs life of HVAC system because it doesn’t have to work as hard (you can actually get a smaller HVAC system)

See our video of what a hot roof installation looks like.

Hot Tip:

Having your HVAC system in non-conditioned space is like having it outside but a hot roof installation places it in the conditioned space, allowing it to work less and keep your home warmer or cooler depending on the season.

Cool Fact:

Using cellulose insulation, you are being green and helping the planet 2 ways: reducing your carbon footprint (using an environmentally-safe product) and cutting energy consumption.
