What is the Best Type of Insulation?

Another question we get a lot is, “What is the best type of insulation?” We think the answer is a no-brainer – but let’s go through some of your options.

Fiberglass Insulation: Here at Dolphin we call this “The pink stuff.” You will find this in most homes, since it may be less expensive (in up front costs) than other types of insulation. However, this type of insulation does not stop drafts as well as others!

Spray Foam Insulation: Many homeowners are attracted to spray foam because they have seen it on home improvement shows on TV. But there are some drawbacks; this insulation is made from a petroleum product. If a fire breaks out in the home, the foam insulation will cause a lot of smoke to develop.

Cellulose Insulation: This is the only type of insulation that we install. Cellulose has the highest mass-to-R value ratio of any insulation product, and helps regulate temperatures better than any other insulation material. It is a green product, made from recycled newspapers. National Fiber is our exclusive cellulose supplier – the material we get from them is as clean as it gets, since they only sell reclaimed (unused) paper products. Cellulose also stops drafts better than other insulations, because of the way it is blown in, and the density of the product. It stops potential drafts, keeping your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

It’s important to note that insulation doesn’t add heat to a cold house – but it does prevent it from leaving. The reverse is also true, as it prevents the cold from entering. This is why it’s so important to have the right type of insulation installed by professionals.
