If your insulation is at least 15 years old, and especially if you’ve had it for 20 years or more, it’s likely no longer working for you. Traditional insulation products lose their effectiveness over time, often due to age breaking them down but also due to the effects of moisture, rodents, or insects inhabiting them.
Is it time to let it go?
That’s why we highly recommend removing your old insulation before you install new insulation. We always remove the old insulation in our customers’ homes, as installing new insulation on top of old can exacerbate the current problems with your old insulation, such as moisture and mold.
You never know what you will find
Removing the old insulation allows us to examine the area where it was installed to see if there are any issues. We often uncover things like wires, lights, mold, etc. that people haven’t realized were there for years or even decades. One time after removing insulation in a customer’s attic, we discovered a buried duct that was wide open, blowing 70-degree air into the attic instead of into the living space, which explained why the homeowner’s living space was so cold! On top of that, they had been paying to heat the attic!
Seal out moisture and prevent mold growth
We’ll not only remove your old insulation but also seal up all the tiny cracks, penetrations and areas around the attic where air and moisture can get in (such as around top plates). You want that air seal because air and moisture rising from below are what creates the mold in insulation as well as in your attic walls, which can create a host of problems.
